SANKOFA THEATER COMPANY:
AUGUST WILSON'S SEVEN GUITARS

Sankofa Theater Company’s previous productions of August Wilson plays—Fences and The Piano Lesson—thrilled Gallo Center audiences. Their presentation of Wilson’s Seven Guitars is sure to do the same. The play, published in 1995, focuses on seven African-American characters in the year 1948. The play begins and ends after the funeral of one of the main characters, showing events leading to the funeral in flashbacks. Seven Guitars represents the 1940s entry in Wilson's “Pittsburgh Cycle,” a decade-by-decade anthology of African-American life in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania during the 20th century. The play was critically acclaimed for its exploration of African-American struggles with identity and self-acceptance, winning a New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play.
