Join David Lockington and the Modesto Symphony Orchestra as we kick off our 89th Classics Series with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3, Eroica. This symphony redefined symphonic music forever and continues to be one of the most popular symphonies of all time. The opening weekend will also feature Gabriel Martins on Dvorak’s Cello Concerto in B minor. Martins has performed internationally in venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, and Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and brings a maturity and nuanced colors well beyond his years.

Founded in 1976, the Modesto Symphony Youth Orchestra (MSYO) serves over 100 young musicians and their families from more than 40 public and private schools in the Central Valley. Led by a deeply engaged leadership team, the youth orchestra attracts a diverse group of outstanding musicians. Members are presented with the opportunity to share their gift of music in an inspiring and challenging orchestral setting alongside their peers from all social, economic, cultural, and geographical backgrounds. As a program within the Modesto Symphony Orchestra Association, members also have the invaluable experience of interacting with our professional musicians, conductors, and visiting guest artists through workshops, side-by-side performances, and clinics.

February brings us two Russian master composers, Rachmaninoff and Rimsky-Korsakov. The program begins with Stephen Hough performing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2. Composer and award-winning pianist, Hough has appeared with most of the major European and American orchestras including the London Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the San Francisco Symphony. The evening concludes with the ever popular Scheherazade. Based off of the legendary tale, “Arabian Nights,” the princess Scheherazade uses her storytelling to outwit the murderous Sultan each night for 1,001 nights. Music Director David Lockington described the Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola as “one of the greatest pieces ever written!” Though Mozart composed the Sinfonia Concertante in Salzberg, it is heavily inspired by his time in Paris. Continuing on our journey through Europe, we’ll travel to Italy with Mendelssohn and his fourth symphony. The Italian Symphony explores the exquisite landscapes, art and culture of Italy.

Known across the world for her powerful voice and perfect pitch, Lea Salonga is a singer and actress who is best known for her Tony Award-winning role in Miss Saigon. In addition to the Tony, she has won the Olivier, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Theatre World Awards, in the field of musical theatre. She was also the first Asian to play Eponine in the musical Les Misérables on Broadway and returned to the beloved show as Fantine in the 2006 revival. Many fans of all ages recognize Lea as the singing voice of Princess Jasmine from Aladdin and Fa Mulan for Mulan and Mulan II. If you’ve enjoyed Gallo Center performances by such Broadway mega-stars as Kristin Chenoweth, Audra McDonald and Idina Menzel, do not miss this!
